In the modern world, knowledge related to technology and natural sciences is extremely relevant. However, no less important for the training of specialists in any specialty is the formation of creative thinking skills. That is why, during foreign language classes at the Faculty FPSC, SumDU, projects are being implemented and allow combining language training, multidisciplinary knowledge and the use of the latest information technologies.

For example, let’s consider a project task on modeling a natural phenomenon and creating an author’s educational video, performed by students during an English lesson at the the Foreign Languages Department  of the Faculty FPSC, SumDU. The topic of the lesson is «Natural disasters».

To implement the project, students needed a mobile phone with a camera and an installed video editing application (iMovie or FilmoraGo), 2 plastic bottles, duch tape and scissors. Step-by-step instructions for creating a tornado at home are offered by the textbook «Spotlight 8» by Yu. Vaulina and D. Duli.

At the first preparatory stage, students are divided into teams of three people and carefully read the instructions in English from the textbook, translating and writing down new words on the topic. At the second stage, students prepare a workplace for the experiment, arrange the necessary materials. Each team member gets a role in the project: one is responsible for filming the process, the second performs actions according to the instructions, the third comments and describes the experiment in English in accordance with the instructions. At the third stage, students upload the video to the video editor, after listening to the lecturer’s instructions regarding the functions and capabilities of the application, review and mount the video. Each team must be creative so that the video created by it can interest their peers in scientific activities and the application of technical knowledge.

During such a lesson with elements of STEAM-education at the Faculty of FPSC, SumDU, students not only practice communication in a foreign language, but also gain knowledge from physics, develop skills in using information technology products, learn to interact effectively in a team and think creatively. This technique can also be useful during the pedagogical practice of students of the specialty «English and German languages and literatures».
