The Linguistic Educational and Methodological Center of the Foreign Languages Department, the Faculty FPSC, SumDU held the XV All-Ukrainian Scientific-Practical Conference of students, postgraduate students and lecturers «To Make the World Smarter and Safer». The event was held on March 31 in online form.
The work of the conference was divided into three sections: «Innovations in medicine and modern life, «Intercultural communication as an instrument of understanding in the modern world diversity. Journalism and multimedia technologies», «High tech achievements for improving life in the modern world. Modern equipment and devices providing high living standards». The second section gathered representatives of the Faculty FPSC.
The purpose of the conference is to provide students with a positive motivation to study foreign languages; to develop the research skills among students and post-graduate students; to improve the ability to present materials in a foreign language; to develop the communication skills of the participants of the conference in a foreign language by joining most of participants to the discussion with the active use of foreign languages; preparing for participation in international conferences; to exchange the experience among Ukrainian language centres in conducting such events.
- Although this is the first time that the conference is held online, it has become a holiday for the participants, - says the chairwoman of the organizing committee, senior lecturer of the Foreign languages Department Svitlana Zolotova. - Today, young researchers have tried themselfs in science, using a foreign language as a means of expressing their thoughts. They were successful in communicating and asking questions in English. In general, this language is very important for science, because it allows researchers from all over the world to share their experiences and achievements.
The guests of the event were Vice-Rector for Scientific Work of SumDU Anatolii Chornous, Dean of the Faculty FPSC Olena Sushkova, Head of the Foreign language Department Nataliia Tatsenko. In their welcoming remarks, each of them wished the participants success and noted the importance of involving young people in scientific activities.
Every year, there are people who are doing reserch for the first time, and it’s really nice. Such forums are very useful, because young researchers can hear evaluations of their work from colleagues and lecturers, and then improve the results.
The conference participants recognize that the new form of the event was rather unusual. However, they enjoyed listening to the little-known topics that colleagues explored.
A student of the specialty «Journalism» Zoreslava Shedenko participates in such a conference for the second time. She says that this experience is interesting, because writing Ukrainian theses is one thing, but in a foreign language, it is a bit more difficult:
- In addition to maintain a scientific style the grammatical and lexical norms of English should be taken into account. The preparation took several steps: from writing the outline of future theses to creating a multimedia presentation. There was excitement before the speech, and that is typical. However, I am glad that I have agreed to speak. It’s a way out of the comfort zone - writing and speaking about journalism in English.
Therefore, the students of the Faculty FPSC, SumDU not only know how «To Make the World Smarter and Safer», but also ready to share this knowledge with the whole galaxy.
