For many years vigorous disputes and polemics on serious themes in journalism have been taking place in the classrooms of Sumy gymnasium №1. Creative personalities who have already determined their interests, goals, talents and future profession take part in annual Tournament of young journalists. Bachelor, Master and Postgraduate students, the staff and the lecturers of the faculty FPSC help to reveal capabilities of smart young people.

This year XVII Hennadiy Petrov regional tournament of young journalists lasted from 25th till 27th October. 12 teams from Sumy schools participated in the competition: “Impuls”, “Paragraph 27”, “The seventeenth wave”, «Madness Paradise», «Vox Populi», «Espada», «Ice», «Veritas», «Nota Bene», «Success», «Incite»; from Shostka – «Hranoslovy». Some of them are quite experienced and some are just the beginners.

This is our first time here, so we are worrying indeed. But still we are very enthusiastic and interested. We want to learn something new, - says the member of the team “Ice” Volodymyr Valiy.

Very experienced participants also share their impressions. Yelyzaveta Laienko from the team «Incite» says:

We trained hard overcoming all the difficulties. Last year the team possessed the second place, so this time we expect even better result.

At the opening ceremony the director of the gymnasium Kateryna Bondarieva sincerely greeted all the pupils, announced the beginning of the tournament, mentioned that a lot of now famous journalists started their career from their participation in this tournament and wished them success.

The head of the jury, associate professor at the department of Journalism and Philology of the faculty FPSC of SumDU Volodymyr Sadivnychyi and the head of the department professor Olena Tkachenko mentioned in their speeches that the participants are to work hard to gain the success and get the victory in this tournament.

The deputy of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine greeted young mass-media specialists and wished them success in their battle.

Further was the game…

From the very first minute and till the very end two emotions reigned in the rooms – excitement and tense, as far as on demonstrated knowledge depended not only grades from the jury or possessed place, but also personal delight from the game, personal feelings and worrying.

After first games in quarterfinals the participant of a new team “Madness Paradise” Diana Kartasheva shared her emotions:

Personally I, as a representative of a new team that participates in the tournament for the first time, extremely liked the game – it is tense, exciting and interesting.

She also added that it is very difficult to have polemics with highly experienced “Nota Bene” team.

The lecturer of the department of journalism and philology at the faculty FPSC of SumDU Alla Fedoryna also marked out excellent preparation of “Nota Bene” team, mentioned unequal forces of teams, great difference in experience and preparation.

In general, games are not equal as far as forces of teams are extremely different. But game is a very interesting phenomenon.

Participants joined the work gradually and in quarterfinals all the teams fought tough and were ready to get the victory. Children concentrated on the competition completely. Every team tried to show itself as a worthy rival providing skillful reporting, opposing and criticizing. Extremely serious questions on journalism theory were discussed, including such issues as differences and common features of such notions as “informing” and “propaganda”. Participants demonstrated deep knowledge in many spheres of social life.

Three teams met in the final: “Nota Bene” (Sumy gymnasium № 1), «Hranoslovy» (Shostka teaching and educational institution: I-II level specialized school – Shostka City Rada liceum) and “Espada” (O. Butko Sumy specialized school № 10). Generally, «Hranoslovy» and “Espada” possessed II place, “Nota Bene” – I place.

As a rule, the air was full of tense and intrigue, but our team played rather for personal entertainment, than for winning. Actually as usually. I am sure, that is that thing which helps “Nota Bene” to win regional tournament of young journalists every each year, - shared her emotions the captain of the team-winner Olena Shtokalo. The girl also added that this year final game became kind of pinnacle of her tournament experience as far it was for the last time.

Some participants were awarded by the jury with diplomas in different nominations – for the best report, opposing, critical reviewing, artistry, tolerance, best reasoning, etc.

The captain of Shostka team «Hranoslovy» Mariia Doroshenko received a special prize from the department of journalism and philology of the faculty FPSC of SumDU for the victory in nomination “The personality of the tournament”.

Regional mass media such as UA:Суми, ТРК «Відікон», Шостка.info and others were interested in the tournament of young journalists.

As usual, Bachelor, Master and Postgraduate students, the staff and the lecturers of specialty Journalism of the faculty FPSC actively helped to organize and hold the tournament: they worked as the jury and tallying commission members, anchormen, editors of the tournament of young journalists newsreel “Trubadur”.
