The Department was established on August 24, 1968.
Head of the Department – Nataliia V. Tatsenko, Doctor of Philology, Professor.
It functions as a universitywide department, providing academic process for all specialties of SumDU in all forms of education (intramural, extramural and distance). Lecturers provide the English, German and French languages for students who obtain Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree as well as postgraduate students and participants of training courses. In addition the Department provides students of Medical Faculty with Latin and medical terminology.
Great attention is paid to optimizing and intensifying academic process, widely using innovative technologies, scientific approach to optimizing foreign languages learning, promoting extracurricular activity with students, using methodological information of high quality, communicative and professional focusing of academic process in general.
The Department has created potent material and technical basis (language laboratory, computer classrooms, multimedia classes, methodic room with great amount of educating manuals, audio and video information, dictionaries).
At the Department functions Linguistic Training and Resource Center that provides commercial services in foreign language learning and methodological assistance.

The Department was established on September 1, 1991 as the Department of the Russian Language. The name was changed in 2009.
Head of the Department - Olha P. Sydorenko, PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor.
The Department of Language Training for Foreign Citizens provides studying of the Ukrainian and Russian languages as foreign languages for foreign students at the Training Department and all faculties of SumDU.
Education is provided according to educational standards in language training for foreign citizens determined by programmes in the Ukrainian and Russian languages as foreign, approved and recommended by Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The programmes are created according to communicative needs of different categories of foreign citizens who get higher education at Ukrainian higher educational institutions.
Lecturers of the Department provide language training for participants of the Training Department of the International Education Center and for foreign students of Medical Institute, Faculty of Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies, Faculty of Economics and Management, Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications, as well as it provides the Russian language training for postgraduate foreign students.

The Department was established on July 1, 1991 as the Department of Sociology and Cultural Studies. Since September 1, 2016 it functions as the Department of Psychology, Political Science, and Socio-Cultural Technologies.
Head of the Department – Nina D. Svitailo, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, the head of Coordination Center of Humanitarian Policy of SumDU.
The Department of Psychology, Political Science, and Socio-Cultural Technologies is a graduating department, which educates Bachelors in specialty “Management of Social and Cultural Activity”, “Psychology” and “Social Work”; it also functions as a universitywide department, providing psychological, sociological, politological and culturological disciplines for students of all faculties.
Bachelor training is implemented according to the principles of dual education with the extended series of practice-oriented disciplines and perspectives for successful employment.
At the Department successfully function several research-analytic and social centers and laboratories which form a perfect basis for students’ practice. They provide high level of professional training, practical skills acquiring and possibility to udertake projects.

Head of the Department - Iryna K. Kobyakova, PhD in Philology, Professor.
The Department of Germanic Philology is a graduating department, which educates Bachelors, providing intramural and parallel education, Masters, providing intramural and extramural education, and PhD in Philology. Specialty “Germanic Languages and Literature (Translation included)”.
The Department provides studying of two basic languages – English and German, other languages for studying are Polish, Czech, Chinese and Latin. The classes are carried out according the latest technologies for studying in modern language laboratories, video halls, and computer classrooms. Language practice in Poland, Germany, Great Britain, the USA, and Turkey is available.
At the Department provide their services Translation Training and Resource Center «LinguoStar» (provides preparation, organizing and carrying out international language exams (tests) TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, etc); English language session at children’s summer camp “Univer”; Research Office; Travel Office; School of European Languages. Annually the Department carries out All-Ukrainian students’ scientific-practical conference "Translation Innovations" and Competition of poetry and artistic translation “Alter Ego”.
Graduates can work at diplomatic missions, as interpreters at official events, in national and international establishments, governing institutions, private enterprises, as translators of fiction, technical, judicial literature, as teachers of foreign languages in educational institutions, etc.

The Department was established on October 4, 2001 as the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology; since June 21, 2004 it functions as the Department of Journalism and Philology.
Head of the Department - Volodymyr O. Sadivnychyi, Doctor of Social Communications, Associate Professor.
The Department of Journalism and Philology is a graduating department, which educates Bachelors and Masters in specialty “Journalism” (Degree Programmes “Journalism” and “Advertising and Public Relations”), providing intramural and extramural education and distance learning; it also functions as a universitywide department, providing philological disciplines for students of all faculties. Postgraduate Degree education in specialty “Journalism” is also provided.
At the Department functions «PR-Consulting» center which provides advertising and PR services.
Training of journalists at SumDU was started in 2004. They educate experts for journalistic publicistic, analytical, advertising, social, institutional, management and PR activity.
The Department supports students’ desire to acquire practical skills in their free time, provides practice and traineeship in leading media establishments, advertising agencies, PR services of Ukraine and Europe.
To train able to compete professionals the Department has created potent material and technical basis (audio and video equipment, computer classrooms, multimedia classrooms, radio studio, “Apple” classroom). At the Department functions university newspaper “Rezonans”.
Regularly arranged and carried out research conferences, published scientific professional journals “Filologichni Traktati” and “Obraz” are available.
